U.S. asks for 5-yr. extension on smallpox

U.S. officials at the World Health Organization conference in Geneva have asked that destruction of smallpox stockpiles kept in Atlanta at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and at a laboratory in Russia be kept on hand for five more years, reports the Washington Post.U.S. health officials are arguing at the conference that started Monday that the stockpiles are necessary for research that could prevent a catastrophe they say could occur if undocumented stockpiles of smallpox were released anywhere in the world as part of a bioterrorism…
